St. James Preschool Programs

We think of ourselves as the small school making a big difference. Our class sizes range between 10 and 18 children, with 2 to 3 teachers per classroom, ensuring that every child in our care is seen, heard, and loved.

Our programs are housed in three lovingly appointed classrooms and a modest but mighty outdoor play space. We consider the Richmond District and the surrounding areas an extension of our school, as we take age-appropriate excursions that increase in adventurousness as the children grow — from walking hand in hand around the block to hiking in the Marin Headlands.

Our play-based philosophy means that we are dedicated to infusing learning into all of our play. The teaching teams aim to create environments and opportunities that encourage children to engage in various forms of play that promote development across multiple domains, including social-emotional skills, early literacy, and math concepts. Teachers actively support and facilitate play experiences by providing resources, modeling play behaviors, and creating safe and stimulating spaces for exploration and growth.

Big days

The first days in our Twos program are often a child’s first step away from home. Thankfully, our Turtle class teachers are experienced in helping toddlers find their stride. It's not uncommon for kids to attach to one teacher during this transition period.

Creative play

The wheels are turning. The eyes are opening. The world is expanding. Threes are known for their explosive development, and our teachers adjust and adapt activities throughout the year to create a dynamic learning environment for each child.

Ready for K!

We add a little more structure into the pre-K year without subtracting any fun. Skill building continues and subject/project work ensures our graduates are well-prepared for what comes next -- kindergarten!

Extended day

We offer an extended day program for families that need full-day placement. The afternoon program keeps children engaged and happy from drop off to pick-up. Expect friendships to really solidify and look for new skills, like speaking español, to shine through for our Extended Day kiddos.

Experienced teachers

SJP teachers are dedicated to the school, and the school is dedicated to them. Many of our teachers have been teaching for over 20 years, and our staff reflects the rich diversity of San Francisco. Each teacher brings their own interests and expertise to the development of the classroom and curriculum.
